As a player and a GM I have long been enchanted by the setting of the Fading Suns game world and long been frustrated by it's variety of mechanics. Judging from comments across the internet from players and even the creators of the game, I'm not alone. I tried a myriad of house rules to patch up what I saw as problems with the rules but ultimately it came down to what I felt was an overall thematic problem with the rules for Fading Suns. The Victory Point System was just too ephemeral in nature to relate the grittiness of a medieval universe and the D20 rules were just too stiff to provide a robust system for the variety of stories to be told. I looked at a wide range of possible Role Playing Games before I decided that Fading Suns needed to be run in the GURPS system. GURPS was already a generic system with rules systems that could support the world of Fading Suns. It was a non-heroic system that gave the game a necessarily dangerous feel. GURPS is a human-scale game that excels at telling human stories and that was essential in the rules I chose.
About five years ago I set out making a set of rules to adapt GURPS for a single story I wanted to tell. My players loved it so much that I expanded the rules to be able to run a campaign. My players decided they wanted to tell their own stories so the rules were adapted and adapted again. We have gone through roughly 18 revisions and ported the rules the Fourth Edition of GURPS until we have come to this current version of the rules that we're publishing here. However, this is not where we stop. Now that our rules are being put up on the web it's my hope that players that download this rules set will send us feedback that will help us continue to evolve and improve these rules.
These rules are not an attempt to challenge the copyright of FASA Games or their predecessor Holistic Games to the Fading Suns game world. Wherever possible we have omitted game-world information and statistics save where it provides a relevant reference to be able to utilize the game rules. If you like this game setting, I strongly encourage you to purchase the Revised Edition of Fading Suns as well as any of the original sourcebooks you can find. They are a remarkable set of thematic pieces and form one of the best game worlds I have ever seen. These rules are not an attempt to challenge the copyright of Steve Jackson Games GURPS Role Playing System. Wherever possible we have avoided printing any trademark or copyright information save where it serves to help players locate appropriate rules in the GURPS game books. If you like these rules I strongly encourage you to purchase GURPS Fourth Edition, it is a fantastic and adaptive rule set. These rules are not an attempt to profit or co-profit.
